Artist Cézanne, Paul

Cezanne often painted at Auvers and at nearby Pontoise until 1877. To some degree, his increasing preoccupation with landscape was because of the influence of Pissarro and the other Impressionists. Working together, Pissarro and Cezanne frequently painted one and the same motif. It is quite possible that Cezanne conceived the present canvas on Pissarro s advice (in any case, such is the opinion of Bernard Dorival). Also at Pontoise, Cezanne painted some views oi the Quartier de I'Ermitage, which is close in motif to the Pushkin Museum picture (\enturi, nos. 170 and 176). The most probable dating uf this picture (also known as Paysage de Gisors, Le Clos des Mathurins, Route de VErmitage a Pontoise) is 18753ƒ41877, although this date has not met with general acceptance.
